It's the season of sequels! Films and television shows alike are looking to the past for inspiration. With the ongoing trend of bringing back popular film franchises, a Disney classic seems to be following the footsteps of movies like "Bridget Jones's Baby" and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2."

Rumor has it that a third film in "The Princess Diaries" series is in the works, which can only mean good things for the now 20-something-year-old fans who grew up with Mia Thermopolis, the series' lead character. The nostalgia is strong and while Disney has not officially confirmed the news, the buzz surrounding the film continues to spread online.

Of course, these rumors aren't without backing. They owe it to Garry Marshall, director of the first two "The Princess Diaries" films, as he has said that negotiations are being made for another one. While speaking to E! News, Marshall revealed, "Well, you know, Disney is quite powerful and they say they would like to announce—not me—but we are talking."

Anne Hathaway, who plays Mia, is reportedly also interested in doing a third film. After all, "The Princess Diaries" was Hathaway's breakout movie. A husband, baby and an Academy Award later, it looks like Hathaway is ready to go back to her roots.

While guesting on the web series talk show "Larry King Now," Marshall also told the host that he has talked to Julie Andrews about it as well.

Fans are undoubtedly hopeful that the third film in "The Princess Diaries" franchise will come to light.

The first film told the story of Hathaway's character, an average teenager, discovering that she's the princess of the fictional country of Genovia. Mia's romantic interest then was Michael Moscovitz, her best friend's brother, played by Robert Schwartzman. But in the sequel, "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement," Mia had a different romantic interest, Chris Pine's Nicholas.

However, Schwartzman has revealed to Glamour magazine that he is indeed interested in reprising his role if given the chance. Should he be casted once more, fans can only wonder how the story would go from there.
