'Underground' season 2 spoilers: Harriet Tubman will be a key character in new season

(Underground WGN / Facebook)'Underground' is renewed for another season by WGN America.

"Underground" has just finished its season 1 and it was also confirmed that WGN has renewed it for a second season. Before it even started filming, the creators of the series have already revealed some teasers of what fans should expect in the upcoming installment, one of which is the story of Harriet Tubman.

In history, Harriet Tubman was the one who started the Underground Railroad, helping other slaves escape from a life of bondage to a life of freedom. In the shocking season 1 finale of the series, the show introduced her to the audience. According to the creators of the show, she will be given more focus in season 2.

In an interview on Deadline, "Underground" co-creator Misha Green said that Harriet Tubman will be a recurring figure in the show's second season.

Co-creator Joe Pokaski added that they really planned season 1 to be personal, telling the story of a group of slaves who yearned for freedom. Season 2, however, will be more intertwined with history.

"The whole idea within Season 2 is that now we can look at the Underground Railroad more as a network and the first integrated Civil Rights Movement in America. We want to explore the structure of it a little better in the next season, so our world, hopefully it's going to get a little bigger. And in getting, bigger, there are so many stories all over the place to tell," he said.

They also added that a lot of their characters will return to help others gain that freedom. However, they will be seen in a very different context in season 2.

Meanwhile, Green also revealed in a tweet that the series has already been planned to have five seasons. She said that season one was just the beginning of the story.
