US Presidential polls latest news and updates: Candidates hitting key states as election day nears

(Reuters/Lucy Nicholson and Jim Urquhart)Both candidates are hitting several key states as election day nears.

The US Presidential Elections is just a few short weeks away and both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are digging their heels in and hitting the campaign trail harder than ever. But how are the candidates doing in key battleground states?

Trump's numbers have been steadily slipping down ever since his weak performance at the first presidential debate. But the release of a video tape from 2005 showing the Republican nominee bragging about getting away with grabbing women's genitalia caused his standing to go even lower.

This doesn't mean a victory for Clinton, though, who still has to win over key states like Arizona. A recent survey conducted by RealClearPolitics gave Trump a one-point lead over his opponent. It should be pointed out, though, that the survey was done before the Access Hollywood video was released and before the second debate. However, a survey done by another organization from Oct. 2  to 4 gave Clinton a 5-point lead over Trump.

The two candidates are also focusing much of their attention on Florida, where the latest polls show Clinton has a 3-point lead. It's the same in North Carolina, as RealClearPolitics gives the former Secretary of State a 2.5 point lead. However, it's a much different scenario in Iowa, where surveys had Trump ahead of his rival by 3.7 points.

It would appear that the 2005 video tape had really hurt Trump's chances in Ohio. Clinton previously had a 5-point lead over Trump in this state, but a survey conducted from Oct. 9 to 11 shows her leading by 9 points. She's also up by 9 points in Pennsylvania and 12 points in Virginia.

A lot of Americans will undoubtedly be sighing with relief that one of the country's most controversial and divisive campaign periods will finally be coming to an end. Unfortunately, that might not be the case. Trump's recent comments about how America's political system is "rigged" and his warnings that the election might be stolen from him have some sectors worried that it will undermine the legitimacy of the 2016 elections.

The US Presidential Elections will be held on Nov. 8.
