Volvo 40.1 and 40.2 Concepts news: New concept vehicles preview Volvo's 40 Series small car family

(Volvo)The Volvo 40 Series has been previewed by the 40.1 and 40.2 concept vehicles.

Volvo has released the first images of its 40.1 and 40.2 concept vehicles. These new concepts preview the 40 Series, Volvo's new range of small cars. Volvo's introduction of the 40.1 and 40.2 Concepts also serves as the official launch of the company's global small car strategy that will help revitalize the brand in the next four years.

The Volvo 40 Series models will be built using the newly developed Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). This platform has been developed specifically for smaller cars and will pave the way for bold and daring designs. The flexible architecture also allows Volvo to create both high-clearance and low-clearance cars.

"Each member of our product family has its own distinct character, just like the members of a real family. CMA has helped us capture something special, something youthful in our new concept cars. They have energy, a disruptive and engaging urban character that makes them stand out amongst the crowd. This is the flavor of small Volvos to come," said Thomas Ingenlath, senior vice president of Design at Volvo.

According to reports, Volvo's small car family will include the new V40 hatchback, the S40 saloon, and the XC40 crossover.

Based on the released images, the 40 Series vehicles will feature Volvo's signature design cues like the Thor's Hammer headlights, a bold chrome front grille, striking C-shaped taillights, and sleek rooflines. Meanwhile, the interiors will feature classic Scandinavian design elements.

According to Volvo, these small cars will feature a fresh and more contemporary design that speaks of today's younger generation.

The design also reflects the hybrid and electric powertrains of the upcoming 40 Series vehicles. The small car range will feature a wide variety of powertrains, including a pure battery electric vehicle and Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Furthermore, the upcoming vehicles will offer users a full range of connectivity services and the most advanced packages for safety features and driver assistive technologies.

The first 40 Series vehicle will enter production in 2017.
