Xiaomi Mi 5 rumors: fingerprint sensor among the anticipated specs

(Xiaomi)Xiaomi Mi 5 successor to the Xiaomi Mi 4 could have fingerprint sensor

Smartphones with fingerprint sensors are still not that common. Only the premium models from Samsung and Apple come with the feature, which users use to unlock their devices and make mobile payments. However, it appears that budget and mid-range models are slowly catching up to these premium devices, as rumors suggest that the Xiaomi Mi 5 has a fingerprint sensor on board.

As of now, this is just a speculation, but the Internet has been full of rumors about the device, with the latest one reportedly showing the upcoming smartphone and the leaked teaser picture, which showcased a fingerprint. GSMArena states that the teaser image was seen on a social media account in China. It came with the tagline "Are you ready?" and the presence of the fingerprint hinted towards a sensor being on board the Mi 5. This is the first time that a rumor has indicated that the Mi 5 will have a fingerprint scanner.

As for the hardware of the device, it appears that Xiaomi wants to outfit it with the latest Snapdragon 820 processor, which has yet to be released for mass production. Reporting on the rumor, Phone Arena states that this could be the reason why the Mi 5 has not yet been released, despite the previous version, the Mi 4, being released in July of last year. However, there are also some speculations that Xiaomi plans to release a variant of the Mi 4, named the Mi 4c, later this month.

While many think that Xiaomi is waiting for the Snapdragon 820, another set of rumors has pointed toward the Mi 5 coming with the problematic Snapdragon 810, which is prone to overheating. There is also the possibility that the device could have a MediaTek Helio X20 chipset and a CPU with ten cores arranged in three clusters. As for the display on the device, it is said to measure 5.2 inches, which comes with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels per inch.
