'Amazing Spiderman 3' Update: Drew Goddard comes on board rebooted Spiderman franchise

A lot has happened for Sony's Spiderman franchise since the release of 'Amazing Spiderman 2'. While AMS 2 grossed a respectable $700 million in the box office, the movie received, at best, a lukewarm response from both fans and critics alike.

Most movie studios would be happy with AMS 2's box office haul, but it appears that Sony expects a whole lot more from what was once the top grossing superhero franchise in the business. It comes as no surprise then than Sony has finally agreed to collaborate with Marvel Studios to produce future Spiderman films. The agreement also opens up the possibility of Spiderman appearing in the overall Marvel universe, which was, of course, extremely well-received by fans and should give the Spiderman franchise an overall boost thanks to Marvel's impressive q-rating.

Spiderman's return to the Marvel movie universe most likely spells the end of Andrew Garfield's turn as the lovable wall crawler. Garfield did a reasonable enough job in the role, but the once again rebooted franchise will look for a different actor in the role to differentiate it from the previous films.

The next Spiderman movie looks to be years away, but a recent report from Deadline Hollywood suggests that Sony and Marvel have found their director (and possibly writer) in Drew Goddard. Goddard previously worked with 'Avengers' director Joss Whedon in the horror comedy film 'Cabin in the Woods' and was rumored to have worked on the now cancelled 'Sinister Six' film. Sony is reportedly happy with his existing body of work and the Whedon connection certainly doesn't hurt his chances in nabbing the coveted role.

For now, we can only speculate on what's next for Spiderman. Fans are certainly excited to see the character interact in the Marvel film universe, and there is a possibility that he might be added to 'Captain America 3: Civil War'. Astute comic book fans are aware of Spiderman's major role in the Civil War comic book series and that could serve as an interesting way to introduce the character to the Marvel film universe while his solo movies are being developed.
