iPad Mini 5 release date, specs: Apple to merge tablet with iPad Air 3?

(Apple)The iPad Mini 5 is rumored to arrive this month. Pictured is the device's predecessor, the iPad Mini 4.

Apple has always been at the center of many tech rumors. This time around, along with the iPhone 7, it is widely believed that the iPad Mini 5 will be unveiled. However, the mini tablet is reportedly going to undergo a big change. Rumor has it that Apple plans on merging the iPad Mini 5 with the iPad Air 3 and create the iPad Pro Mini.

Both the iPad Mini 5 and the iPad Air 3 have been plagued with cancellation talks. Apple has not spoken out about these rumors, so there's no way of knowing if there is any truth to them at this point. However, reports believe that the iPad Mini 5 will become the iPad Pro Mini as it becomes one with the iPad Air 3. This is perhaps an effort by the Cupertino-based tech giant to streamline their offerings.

It was previously reported that the launch date of the iPad Mini 5 would coincide with the iPhone 7's supposed unveiling. It is believed that both devices will be introduced to the public today, Sept. 7. If not, it could land sometime over the next few days, with an exact date rumored to be Sept. 9.

Among Apple's iPad offerings, the iPad Pro is the most popular. Given that, it would definitely make sense for the company to do a bit of rebranding. Both the iPad Air and the iPad Mini are thin and small iterations of the tablet, so combining them to make a lineup catering to those descriptions would not entirely be a bad thing.

As for what's under the hood, it is expected that the iPad Mini 5 will come with a more powerful processor in the form of an A9 chipset. It is also rumored to run on iOS 10 out of the box. Like its predecessor, it will have two cameras. Another added feature is 3D Touch technology.

Right now, everything is still up in the air, so readers should take this news with a grain of salt.
