iPhone 8 release date, specs rumors: Next-gen iPhone to be foldable?

(Apple)Apple's iPhone 8 is rumored to sport a major overhaul in design and features.

While foldable cellphones have become a thing of the past, big names like Apple and Samsung have started looking into foldable screen technology. Apple was recently awarded a patent for a foldable iPhone design, begging the question: Will the iPhone 8 be foldable?

According to Patently Apple, which first spotted the patent application back in 2014, the Cupertino-based tech giant was recently granted the patent design, which came with illustrations. Seen at the European Patent Office, the design features flexible housing and hinges that allow the smartphone to be bended in half. A three or four-bar linkage system is used.

Apparently, this is not the first time that Apple has been granted a patent for a foldable screen design. They were previously awarded a patent for a foldable iPhone that uses advanced carbon nanotube structures.

With this, many are wondering if the iPhone 8 will be a foldable smartphone. It can be recalled that foldable phones, or flip phones, were immensely popular back in the day. Everyone wanted a flip phone, especially Motorola's Razr. Could this trend be making a comeback?

Apple isn't the only one that has explored foldable technology. Samsung also filed a patent for a foldable screen, which is rumored to be making it to the Galaxy Note 8.

As for its display, it was previously reported that the iPhone 8 would have OLED displays, making it the first in the lineup to sport this technology. However, according to 9to5Mac, only one of the three iPhone 8 variants will have an OLED display. The other two models will have the same TFT-LCD display. Additionally, the dual camera seen on the iPhone 7 Plus will remain on the Plus series, making it to the 5.5-inch variant and not the 4.7-inch variant.

The iPhone 8 will mark the flagship's 10th anniversary, which means it will surely be a special one in the series. Because of this, there are also rumors saying that it could be named iPhone 10.
