iPhone 8 specs rumors, release date: Truly wireless charging not likely for Apple's next smartphone

(Apple)The iPhone 8 will reportedly not have truly wireless charging.

The hotly anticipated iPhone 8 is reportedly coming out this year with a drastically different look and highly attractive features. However, one of its most attractive rumored features — truly wireless charging — does not seem like it is going to make it to Apple's 10th anniversary iPhone.

This much was laid out in an investor's note written by Copperfield Research. According to the note, it is highly unlikely that Apple will integrate truly wireless charging into the iPhone 8. First of all, the upcoming iPhone 8 is heavily expected to have an all-glass casing as opposed to the aluminum material to which consumers have grown accustomed. And most wireless charging features still require some sort of contact with a charger, with a truly wireless feat yet to be achieved.

The rumor that Apple would be adopting a truly wireless charging feature for the iPhone 8 stems from the Cupertino-based tech company's hinted-yet-unconfirmed partnership with Energous Corporation. Apple is apparently going to use Energous' WattUp radio frequency technology to achieve wireless charging, but Copperfield argues that this does not make sense considering radio frequency does not pass through glass. This would render Apple's all-glass plan for the iPhone 8 pointless.

For this reason, it is more possible that Apple is going to use its in-house inductive wireless charging technology instead of the one from Energous. However, that does not necessarily mean that Apple's partnership with Energous will be fruitless. Somewhere down the line, Energous' WattUp technology could still be utilized in future devices.

Apart from wireless charging and a new look, the iPhone 8 is also expected to have an IP68 certification, which allows the smartphone to be submerged in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. This is not exactly an impressive feat, since Samsung already beat Apple to the punch in the area of water and dust proofing without having the need to remove the headphone jack — a change that was apparently integral to make the iPhone 7 IP67 certified.

Right now, everything is still up in the air, so readers are advised to take this news with a grain of salt.
