Mario Kart 8 introduces two new downloadable content (DLC) packs that feature characters from mega hit franchises The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing.

"Two new downloadable content packs will take the world of Mario Kart™ 8 in directions the franchise has never seen before, while significantly expanding game-play options," according to Nintendo's official press release.

The press release continues, "Mario Kart 8 owners who advance purchase both packs bundled or individually will get eight new colors of Yoshi and eight new colors of Shy Guy to race with immediately."

First-time crossover characters are Link from The Legend of Zelda and Isabelle and the Villager from Animal Crossing.

Each sells for $7.99, or $11.99 when you purchase both.

Aside from Link, The Mario Kart 8 Zelda DLC that will be available this coming November will include cat-suit Peach and tanooki-suit Mario as well as four vehicles and eight tracks.

Also, aside from Isabelle and the Villager, the Mario Kart 8 Animal Crossing set for release in May 2015 will bring forth the skeletal Dry Browser, four vehicles and eight tracks.

Advance purchase is available via Nintendo's eShop.

Just recently, Mario Kart 8 launched the Mercedes-Benz DLC that showcased three spectacular rides from the German carmaker: GLA, W 25 Silver Arrow and 300 SL Roadster.

This first major update harvested rave reviews from gaming pundits, including Kotaku.

"All the adjustments are welcome improvements that make the whole Mario Kart 8 experience ever more simple and intuitive. The mini-map is my favorite tweak. Having to look down at the GamePad just doesn't work in a racing game of this calibre—it's too fast-paced and intense to divert your attention so completely, even if it's just for a fraction of a second. It looks great, too," Yannick LeJacq of Kotaku said.

At present, Mario Kart 8 has 179,712 possible kart combinations, which can easily make a serious gamer go crazy.
