New 'Dragon Ball Super' anime rolls out in Japan next month; takes up Dragon Ball Z plot

After 18 years off the air, Dragon Ball Z, one of the most iconic anime television series in the history of the genre, will bring back Son Goku and company in a new series called 'Dragon Ball Super'. The new series will continue from where 'Dragon Ball Z' left off and will bring with it even stronger threats than previous big bads Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu.
Producer Osamu Nozaki expressed excitement at the new series. "As I read the plot [of the series] I've already received from Akira Toriyama, my dreams for this begin to expand. An enemy even stronger than Buu or Freeza may appear," he said, as reported in an article at the Anime News Network.
It's unclear at this point if the events in the most recent Dragon Ball movie 'Resurrection of F' will lead into 'Super'. 'Resurrection' aired in Japan last month and is set to air in various international territories in the coming weeks. The movie featured the return of long-time Dragon Ball villain Frieza and his new Golden form transformation. Son Goku, along with his close ally Vegeta, also unveiled a brand new Super Saiyan God form to counteract the powers of Golden Frieza.
The announcement of 'Super' comes at the heels of two straight successful original movies set in the Dragon Ball universe. The first such movie aired in 2013 and was entitled 'Battle of Gods'. The second is the aforementioned 'Resurrection of F', which did extremely well in its Japanese release. The franchise had its eyes set on a live action movie franchise with 'Dragonball Evolution', but the project was ultimately a failure both critically and commercially.
'Dragon Ball Super' premieres on June next month on Fuji TV in Japan on a 9 AM Sunday timeslot. An international release schedule has yet to be unveiled but is expected in the coming months.
