NVIDIA GTX 1060 released: takes on GTX 1080 this July 19

One more day to go and PC builders and gamers alike will be getting their hands on NVIDIA's latest offering of graphics processing unit (GPU), the NVIDIA GTX 1060, which is classified under the mid-ranged graphics cards category. The forthcoming card is set to go up against other mid-ranged and high-end GPUs, like its bigger brother, the GTX 1080.

The graphics card, which will be globally released on July 19, will have an initial price of at least $250 and NVIDIA's partner motherboard manufacturers will also be dishing out their very own versions of the said card. The upcoming GPU was built using the Pascal architecture and is now powered by the new GP106 chipset, unlike its other fellow GeForce series 10 cards like the GTX 1070 and 1080 that have the older GP104 processor.

Moreover, the soon-to-be-released GPU will target budget-conscious consumers who are looking for affordable cards that don't necessarily compromise quality. The GTX 1060 is said to perform much better than the older GeForce GTX 980 in which the former will just consume 120 watts of power compared to the latter's 165 watts of thermal design power (TDP).

The next GPU will have a hefty 6 GB of double data rate type five (GDDR5) of RAM, a total of 1280 Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) cores and 1,700 MHz of boost clock speed.

The GTX 1080, on the other hand, is no doubt far more powerful and a better performer compared to the GTX 1060. The former went out last May 27 and boasted that it will be three times quicker than the norm with boost clock speeds reaching up to 1.7 GHz. The high-end GPU is said to contain a huge sum of 2,560 CUDA cores and it's lodged with ANSEL capabilities for sharp and detailed screen captures. Priced at around $600, the GTX 1080 will also release its "Founders Edition," priced at around $700.

Meanwhile, the GTX 1060 is said to be a VR-ready GPU when it is made available on July 19. NVIDIA is also set to release the card's "Founders Edition" some time after.
