'Alien: Covenant' release date, news: Film launches new trailer; fans create connection to original 'Alien' film

(YouTube/ 20th Century Fox)"Alien: Covenant" releases new trailer, creating a connection with the original movie.

The fear of the unknown is one that gets exploited a lot, and director Ridley Scott uses this to great effect with the upcoming installment to the Alien franchise, "Alien: Covenant." Scott shows that the discovery of a new world can sometimes be pleasant, but mostly horrifying.

In the latest trailer, 20th Century Fox indulges fans in a much-needed extraterrestrial horror. Even the dark corridors provide a foreboding aura, which further carries the fright to the scene where a seemingly harmless lifeform lunges upward. There were no glimpses spoiling how the aliens would look like, but the part where one character's spine gets ripped off is a teaser enough.

True enough, the teaser doesn't immediately show everything that can be expected from the upcoming film, but this did not stop fans from making speculations how it could connect to other Alien movies. There were multiple theories on how the crashed Juggernaut revealed in the trailer could possibly be the Derelict from the original "Alien" film. Even the way dog tags were scattered in the crash site could prove the assumptions, giving rise to further discussions.

If anything, it doesn't sound far-fetched at all. It can be recalled that Scott explained that the upcoming film will be closely related to the first one. In an interview, Scott said, "We are going back to how and why and when the beast was invented. We'll go back into the back door of the very first 'Alien' that I did 30 years ago."

Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender will be reprising their roles as Elizabeth Shaw and David/Walter, respectively, from the 2012 prequel "Prometheus." They will also be joined by newcomers Carmen Ejogo, Danny McBride, Katherine Waterston, and Billy Crudup. It will certainly be another horror/thriller film to watch out for.

"Alien: Covenant" makes a creepy entrance into cinemas on May 19, 2017.
