AMD Ryzen release date, news: Upcoming chip ignites battle of the processors with Intel
More often than not, Intel has been an easy option for technology manufacturers but Advanced Micro Devices is on its way to changing that.
After AMD Ryzen -- the new name for AMD's Zen-based micro chips -- made headlines for its SenseMI technology, recent reports note that the upcoming lineup of AMD processors can actually make Intel run for its money. Added to this, the AMD Ryzen is equipped with 8 cores and 16 threads.
University Herald rounded up several benchmark tests of AMD Ryzen and compared it with Intel's i7. To say the least, the report noted that AMD "scored big."
The report noted that to begin with, the AMD Ryzen has an 8-core, 16-thread feature compared to the Intel i7-7700K that has 50 percent less or a 4-core, 8 thread specification. Having said that, there is no doubt that AMD will emerge as the winner in terms of base clock speed that measures up to 3.4-gigahertz.
In the Cinebench R15 benchmark test, University Herald reported that in the CPU rendering test, AMD Ryzen scored 1,188 points while the Intel Core i7-7700K garnered 966 points. On the other hand, the Fritz Chess benchmark test revealed that AMD Ryzen has a tad better performance, scoring 36.86 points and 17,693 kilo nodes per second compared to Intel Core i7-7700K's 35.52 points and 17,049 kilo nodes per second.
The same report noted that aside from the powerful base clock speed of 3.4 GHz, the AMD Ryzen also supports simultaneous multithreading, an improved cache system and core engines.
AMD has yet to announce the full specifications of the Ryzen processors. But with the benchmark tests that surfaced, it is already proving to be a good option and might even convert some Intel-loyal tech geeks.
As for other details on AMD Ryzen, reports are speculating that it might cost somewhere around $500 to $800 compared to the $1,000 price point of rival Intel Core i7-6900K. It is also being predicted that AMD will release the Ryzen desktop version within the first quarter of 2017 while server versions might be available sometime in the second quarter.
