'Avatar 2' release date, plot news 2016: What is known so far about the upcoming movie

Moviegoers continue to hunger for information about the upcoming sequel to "Avatar." The movie's premiere has been moved several times already with the latest target being December 2018. Two cast members who died in the previous film will be back and the sequel will be more of a family saga.

(Avatar website)On "Avatar 2," the viewers will get to explore the world of Na'vi and their planet Pandora once again.

Actress Sigourney Weaver and actor Stephen Lang, who played Grace and Quaritch, respectively, died in the first film. When their involvement in the upcoming sequel was announced, viewers were immediately intrigued about where their stories will head to. Will they come back as the same characters? Will they be playing new ones?

It looks like their return was in the plans all along. Writer and director James Cameron has hinted about Weaver's return years ago when he teased, "Did I say she was going to be in 'Avatar 2?' Well, I don't want to disabuse her of that fantasy. But have you ever heard of nonlinear storytelling? A lot happens of that planet before she shows up, and before Jake shows up to join her."

It looks like Grace will be seen in flashback scenes, but is the same true for Quaritch? Lang was surpised when he was told he would be back, but was even more surprised when he was reminded by Cameron that he already knew about it while filming the first film. He said, "What it says is that Jim had a saga, an epic in his mind, all the time." However, he also acknowledged that if his character did not make much of an impact, it is possible for him not to come back.

Cameron has also said that the sequels will follow Jake (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), and their children. He said, "It's more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans." As of the latest, the premiere date remains 2018, but no news about the start of production is being made yet.
