The previous episode of "Awkward" saw Jake getting fired from his job at the country club after he attempted to help his friends by giving them gigs at the same place. Jenna and the gang are now feeling guilty about what they've done and plan on making it up to him by throwing him a party.

The official synopsis for the upcoming episode, titled "Digging Deep," reads: "Jenna and Matty are going to continue to renew their friendship by tossing a party for Jake, but an Idea Bin post by Jenna will end up threatening to unravel it all."

A teaser was also shown at the end of the last episode and it showed Jenna sitting in a diner with her friends, discussing how they can make it up to Jake. They decide to throw him a huge bash, which looks successful judging by the intercut clips. Jenna, on the other hand, isn't doing pretty well at her summer job because her posts haven't been getting a lot of attention. Her job is at stake, and in the next scene, Matty asks her if she wrote about their relationship and it doesn't look good.

In need of some extra dough, Jenna got a Fourth of July job at the country club with Jake's help. Tamara follows suit and it soon turns into chaos after they drink too much. Jenna got to know Matty's wild new girlfriend, Sully, and Matty got to hang out with Jenna's beau, Luke.

On the other hand, Sadie got all dressed up for what she thought was a date with Sergio after he called her to meet up. In actuality, Sergio needed extra help at his taco truck, which displeased Sadie. Despite that, she agreed to lend a hand. In the end, though, Sadie got what she wanted and Sergio offered to take her out, having already broken up with his girlfriend.
