'Captain Marvel' news: Rebecca Ferguson tipped to play Carol Danvers; Emily Blunt shares her thoughts on casting rumors
While the DC Cinematic Universe has their "Wonder Woman" movie set to premiere in 2017, Marvel isn't too far behind. Marvel will also debut their first female-led superhero movie, "Captain Marvel," set to hit theaters in 2018.
According to the Cinema Blend, Captain Marvel, in the comic books, was originally Carol Danvers, a member of the U.S. Air Force. After an explosive encounter with technology made by the alien race, Kree, Danvers' genes become fused with Kree genes. She gains superpowers, which include super strength, ability to fly and to absorb and project energy. In the course of her history, Captain Marvel has joined different teams including the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Set to be released as part of Phase Three in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Captain Marvel" is still three years away from its release. Despite the long wait for fans, "Captain Marvel" is already in the early stages of development.
Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve have already been announced as screenwriters for the film. "We've been talking a lot about archetypes and what we want this movie to be about and how to write a strong female superhero," Perlman said.
To bring this strong female superhero to life, there have already been numerous casting rumors on who would be playing Danvers. The frontrunners include Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson and Charlize Theron. There are also rumors that Marvel is courting Angelina Jolie to direct the film.
After strong performances in 2014's "Edge of Tomorrow" and this year's "Sicario," Emily Blunt was the first actress rumored to have been in talks for the role. Eventually, when "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation" was released, people then gravitated toward Rebecca Ferguson as the perfect candidate for the role.
At this point, casting rumors are still unconfirmed.
Blunt, while promoting her movie "Sicario," spoke to MTV to clarify the pervasive rumors about "Captain America."
Blunt has confirmed that she has not been in talks with Marvel at all. "It's crazy. I've not had a phone call about it. Not one whisper of Captain Marvel has come my way. Promise. I don't even know who Captain Marvel is!" Blunt said, quite casually.
In an interview with Indiewire, Blunt also shared her insights on the casting rumors.
"I think it's because the list is very short, because we don't see women in these kind of roles. So I think as soon as you do a role like that, like Charlize did or I did, or Rebecca's done – there's like four of us or something," Blunt said.
"Captain Marvel" is scheduled to be released to theaters on Nov. 2, 2018.
