"Downton Abbey" will be back on air (in the UK, at least) in a few short days and fans are undoubtedly emotional at the prospect of saying goodbye to the hit TV series.

But it's not just the fans who are trying to come to terms with the end. Even the show's stars have reportedly become emotional while shooting their last few scenes.

Jim Carter, who plays the ever reliable but strict butler, Mr. Carson, recently revealed that there were some emotionally charged moments while his character, and the rest of "Downton Abbey's" servants, wrapped up what is rumored to be the show's ultimate scene.

According to the usually staid Carter, they were all in the servants' hall, it was supposed to be New Year's Eve and the scene called for candle lights and a few remnant of the Christmas holiday. They were quietly singing Auld Lang Syne and when done, someone said "cut" and it was over.

The 67-year-old Carter said that he felt that he should say something after the scene wrapped up, since he was a kind of father figure among the actors and the on-screen leader of the group.

"I said, 'Guys, I can't thank you enough.' Then I completely choked up," Carter said. "I was a mess! And all the crew, the blokes were all crying - it was a soggy mess!"

Despite the fans reluctance, it was time for the show to end. And cast member, Elizabeth McGovern, who plays the Countess of Grantham, Cora Crawley, couldn't agree more as she said that all the stories have been told.

The show has always boasted of being a reflection of Britain's history and Crawley's time, as well as that of the other aristocrats, was coming to an end.

However, some fans are fearful of how the series will end as there have been reports that there will be a funeral next season. Some believe it will be that of Downton's gay butler Thomas Barrow. Remarks made by Rob James-Collier, who plays the tragic Thomas, further reinforced those fears. According to the actor, the years that Barrow has struggled with his sexuality are wearing him down and next season will see him "right at the brink."

The sixth and final series of the phenomenal historical drama is set to premiere on British television screens on Sept. 20 and will reportedly end on Christmas day. There's no word yet on when "Downton Abbey" will arrive in the U.S.
