It took more than a decade, but the sequel to the blockbuster film "Independence Day" is finally arriving.

Director Roland Emmerich is back to helm the sequel. He recently participated in a live stream to share several details about the new movie, along with some concept art and behind-the scenes photos. Aired from its New Mexico set, Emmerich revealed that the sequel will be called "Independence Day Resurgence" and is set 20 years after the events in the first movie.

According to the movie's synopsis, "The nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet" by using recovered alien technology. Of course, it was inevitable for the aliens to return with "advanced and unprecedented force."

Battling to save the world again would be returning stars Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch and Vivica A. Fox. They will be joined by Charlotte Gainsburg, Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward.

Jeff Goldblum has said that his character is the head of the defense program tasked to protect the Earth. He expounded on the premise further by saying that the events in the first movie prompted everyone to work together.

"Borders are no longer relevant in the same way, and that's a very beautiful idea," he said.

Sela Ward is the new president in the film while Maika Monroe plays Bill Pullman's daughter who has apparently followed in her father's footsteps and is now a fighter pilot. Hemsworth is described as a soldier driving "a forklift-like 'moon tug' for the lunar outpost of the new initiative."

Brent Spiner will also be back but is a bit secretive about his role. However, he did say his character will still be as "manic and excitable" as the one he played in the first film. Sadly, Will Smith will not be returning to reprise his role as ace fighter pilot Captain Steve Hiller.  

When asked about the choice of title, Emmerich said that the War of '96 (which is what they call the events in the first ID4 movie), led to "a post-World generation that's unified, and that's amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That's a resurgence."

"Independence Day Resurgence" will hit theaters on June 24, 2016.
