'Marco Polo' season 3 spoilers, plot rumors, news: Is Prester John a friend or foe?
Following the release of "Marco Polo" season two on Netflix last July 1, fans are now waiting for the streaming giant's announcement regarding season three, more specifically because of the intriguing character that swayed initial impressions of viewers.
Though there are already a number of mysterious names in the historical series, Prester John, whom Nayan (Ron Yuan) met in the fourth episode, has become a widely debated character due to his mysterious movements by the end of the installment.
According to Movie News Guide, Prester John may become a main antagonist when the show returns for its third season. However, not much is known about the mythical warrior accounted for in Marco Polo's book which came out in the beginning of the 14th century, and it would be interesting to see how the writers come up with a logical and also believable plot in case Prester John does become a major villain.
In "Marco Polo" season two episode four titled "Let God's Work Begin," Nayan told the story of how he became a Christian. Speaking to Pope Gregory X (Gabriel Bryne) and Niccolo Polo (Pierfrancesco Favino), Nayan detailed how he was at the brink of death in the desert when a Christian warrior saved him using supernatural powers.
Unlike normal humans who should feel thirst and hunger in a barren land, Nayan and his strange friend, Prester John, walked through the wilderness for weeks with no food and water but miraculously survived.
It appeared in that episode that Prester John is a friend and someone Nayan could trust through good times and bad. However, The Bitbag notes that by the season finale, Prester John is seen closing in on the Mongol camp in Xanadu.
As fans know, Kublai Khan (Benedict Wong) and his men are in the said camp. It seems fate is still on Kublai Khan's side as Marco (Lorenzo Richelmy) warns his compatriots about the approaching danger.
Details about what happens next have yet to be revealed in season three as the final scenes only show the Mongol camp empty. However, viewers can see that Prester John's staff is there on the ground, all bloody.
Assuming that Kublai Khan, Marco Polo, and the rest were able to escape Prester John's attack (if he indeed attacked the camp), there is a possibility that the Christian mythical warrior who Marco Polo talked about in his book will become one of the great conqueror's archenemies in the upcoming season.
"Marco Polo" season three has yet to be announced by Netflix.
