'NBA Live 16" news: Game gets ripped apart by NBA 2K16; EA's basketball series sold a measly 8,000 copies to 2K Sports 1 million

It's always nice to have options when it comes to video games. One can never have enough survival horror or RPGs. The same goes for sports titles, which is why it was a good idea to have "NBA 2K" and "NBA Live" around. But now it seems that video gamers have unanimously decided that they're happy with just one basketball video game this year – "NBA 2K16."

There were rumors earlier that EA's "NBA Live 16" was massacred by "NBA 2K16." As it turns out, massacre would be the right word to use when comparing the sales numbers of the two games. Reports have pegged "NBA Live 16" of moving only 8,300 copies of the game whereas its rival shipped more than one million units.

And if its massacre of EA's basketball title is not enough, 2K Sports also dominated other heavyweights like "Destiny: The Taken King," "Disney Infinity 3.0," "FIFA 16," "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain," "Madden NFL 16" and "Super Mario Maker."

Its impressive numbers have actually pushed "NBA 2K16" to having the best sports game launch in decades.

This isn't the first time that Electronic Arts has run into trouble with its basketball video game. The series had already been cancelled before because of its poor performance, in terms of sales and production. But the company decided to give the franchise another go and revived it with "NBA Live 14." The reboot was then followed by "NBA Live 15" and "NBA Live 16."

Reception to the game has been iffy at best, with its Metacritic score a barely passable 59 compared to "NBA 2K16's" 87.

One review site, "Gaming Age," appeared to have given voice to what gamers observed about the game. According to its review, the game made the sport appear like it was a "dull, grinding slog."

"The players move like they're trapped in molasses. The AI is braindead. The camera is slow. The controls are sluggish" was also how the site described it. The review also pointed out the game's uninspired and generic plot that sees the player go from rookie to benchwarmer to starting player to NBA star.

Ultimately, "NBA Live" was described as just an ordinary and boring game. It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't something that gamers would likely pick up again, something that appears to have been proven this year.
