'New Girl' season 5 news: Elizabeth Meriwether says show is open to Coach's return; Megan Fox to 'shake things up'

Many changes up ahead for "New Girl" when it returns for season five. It is already expected that Zooey Deschanel will be out of the show for quite some time but it seems she's not the only one not returning to the show; only the other one might be out of the show permanently.

"New Girl" piloted with Damon Wayans Jr., who left right after that episode because he needed to focus on his other show, "Happy Endings." He reprised his role as Coach in season three, upping Jessica Day's (Zooey Deschanel) to four. And while reception to him had been positive, he will not be seen in season five again.

"We love Damon and are so lucky to have had him return for the past season and a half. We are working on crafting an exit for him that will leave the door open for many returns, especially since Coach is our resolution to the upcoming 'Who's Jess' Baby Daddy?' storyline," executive producer Elizabeth Meriwether once told TVLine.

The "baby daddy" part was a joke, referring to lead Deschanel's pregnancy. But one thing is obvious: even if Wayans Jr. opted not to renew his contract, he will always have a place in the show.

But as everybody already knows, not only Wayans Jr. is exiting the show. Deschanel also won't be returning, but thankfully not permanently. She will just finish off her maternity leave and will be returning some time in season five. In her place for the first few episodes is Megan Fox.

Deadline has the details on Fox's role. The story goes that Jess will be out on jury duty. As such, Nick (Jake Johnston), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Winston (Lamorne Morris) will be renting out her room. The lucky lady will be a pharmaceutical sales rep played by Fox.

Meriwether told Deadline in September of Fox's role and performance, "It's insane to me that such a gorgeous person can be so funny, but I guess we just all have to accept it.... We had Megan in mind when we wrote this part – she's the perfect person to come in and shake these guys up."

"New Girl" is scheduled to return this January.
