'Outlander' season 2 spoilers: New faces, show will have twists that are not in the book
Starz' drama series "Outlander" recently wrapped up its first season. But fans are already anticipating its return, especially after the disturbing but excellent finale "To Ransom a Man's Soul."
The British-American drama is based on Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series, a one-of-a-kind historical time travel piece that revolves around Claire Beauchamp Randall (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Claire is a World War II nurse who is married to Frank Randall. But she was mysteriously transported to the year 1743. There she meets, and marries, Highland fighter Jamie Fraser.
The series is a surprise hit for Starz and has already garnered several awards. Its unique and compelling storyline has had audiences coming back for more.
After basking in the success of the first season, "Outlander's" cast and crew are back at work filming the second season. And according to showrunner Ron Moore, the next season will be full of "twists and turns that aren't in the book." He also admitted that while they are basing it on Gabaldon's "Dragonfly in Amber," the second book was more complex so "it's a little tougher challenge to adapt it."
The author does not seem to be put off by the changes and was even reported to be "deeply impressed" by what she learned of the story line.
Aside from taking some liberties with the book, season two will also be different in tone, as Jamie and Claire's decisions and actions might change history. The next season will also see a time jump of about 20 years so the characters will appear much older, something that the actors playing them are looking forward to.
In an interview with Zap2It, actors Heughan and Balfe shared that they are excited to see their characters age.
"Now I get to play a woman who has a child who's in her late teens who's gone through this whole life of experience," Balfe explained. "That's going to be really interesting."
New faces will also be joining the cast. Laurence Dobiesz has been tapped to play Alex Randall, the brother of season one's hated villain, Black Jack Randall. Luckily, his character will be the opposite of his brother. Another new face will be that of Michèle Belgrand-Hodgson who is set to play Madame Elise.
"Outlander" is expected to be back on air early 2016.
