'Penny Dreadful' season 4 release date news: renewal hopes dashed by Showtime's David Nevins
It has been months since "Penny Dreadful" ended its magnificent run on Showtime. But fans still can't let the series rest in peace as discussions still persist on whether the series can still continue in a different form.
"Penny Dreadful's" infamous series finale and the uproar that followed it are now well known. The show ended its third season with the death of Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), the main character. The end was shocking for a number of reasons, foremost of which was that there was no indication that the series would be ending. There was also the fact that a number of new characters were introduced in season 3, like Catriona Hartdegen (Perdita Weeks). The show could have also continued on the strength of the other pioneering characters — Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Ethan (Josh Hartnett), and Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway).
However, it has been roundly reported that show creator and writer John Logan had envisioned the series to end with Vanessa's death. That might have been the case, but Showtime's CEO, David Nevins, revealed during the Television Critics Association summer press tour that he tried to convince Logan to continue with the show.
"I was trying to keep open the possibility of going beyond, but as we were going into that final season, it became clear that the combination of that character and John as a writer were the heart of the show, so it seemed like it was going to be foolhardy to continue going," Nevins explained.
As Nevins pointed out, with Logan having already plotted out Vanessa's death and seemingly ready to move on, to continue with the series would mean losing its authenticity so they decided to end it.
Several petitions had since gone up for the series to be picked up by another network or for Showtime to give fans one final season so that they can wrap up the story arcs of the other characters. However, it seems that as far as Showtime is concerned, "Penny Dreadful" has long been put to rest.
