'Reign' season 4 spoilers, news: Lord Darnley isn't the darling he appears to be, showrunner reveals

(Facebook/ CWReign)Lord Darnley will be Queen Mary's second husband. However, he may not be the darling fans are expecting him to be.

The fourth and final season of "Reign" will arrive next month and fans are in for some heavy drama as showrunner Laurie McCarthy recently teased that Queen Mary's second marriage will be a "tumultuous" one.

Speaking with Yahoo! TV, McCarthy said, "What happens in this chapter in her life is that she meets her second husband and it's an incredibly tumultuous marriage." The EP further explained that Queen Mary (Adelaide Kane) will be forced to "manage her husband, who was very much someone grasping for power."

While Mary shares the same goals with Lord Darnley (Will Kemp), it appears that her husband has different methods in terms of taking the power that he wants. At this time, Queen Mary and Lord Darnley will also have a son. However, fans will see the Queen of Scots fighting hard "not just for her child, but for the people around her."

Basically, "Reign" season 4 is all about what Mary can give up so she can stay in power, McCarthy said. The truths about a woman in power will also be explored in the series finale though it is unclear if the show will follow through with the events in history wherein Mary gets executed by Queen Elizabeth (Rachel Skarsten).

Mary won't be the only one with family troubles in "Reign" season 4. McCarthy teased that Catherine (Megan Follows) will pit her children against each other so she can retain the remaining power that she has. Claude (Rose Williams) will try to intervene but her efforts may all be in vain. Catherine's children aren't as easy to handle as the modern royal children of these days.

Meanwhile, Queen Mary will also meet her third husband in the upcoming installment. Lord Bothwell (Adam Croasdell) will enter the picture though it has yet to be revealed how exactly he will figure into the season after Mary and Lord Darnley's marriage fails. Will Bothwell be the man who will stand with Queen Mary to the end?

"Reign" season 4 is slated for premiere Feb. 10 at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
