'Shadowhunters' season 2 premiere date, spoilers: Clary deals with mother's lies; Jace travels the 'dark path'

(Facebook/ShadowhuntersSeries)Jace and Clary follow separate paths in "Shadowhunters" season 2.

Jace's (Dominic Sherwood) fate in the second season of the Freeform series "Shadownhunters" has gotten fans worried, especially now that he is in league with Valentine (Alan Van Sprang).

Showrunner Ed Decter confirmed in a recent interview that they have reasons to be, as Sherwood's character is destined to travel the dark path in the upcoming installment. He told TV Line that they would stay true to the books and show Jace as he undertakes a very dangerous journey, one where may never return from. The series is based on Cassandra Clare's wildly successful books, "The Mortal Instruments" series. It follows the story of Clary (Katherine McNamara), who learned she was a shadowhunter when she turned eighteen.

Speaking of McNamara's character, Decter shared that the new episodes would still dwell on the growing sexual tension between her and Jace. The two believe they are siblings, which makes the attraction doubly worrying. The EP said that while there would be near misses in Clary and Jace's quest to quell whatever feelings they have for each other, they will both remain chaste. Clary's reunion with her estranged mother Jocelyn (Maxim Roy) will also prevent her from thinking too much. She will want to learn why the older woman has lied to her for the last eighteen years.

"While they are brother and sister, despite the fact that they have these odd feelings, they are chaste. There's a moment with the Seelie Queen, but that's a little different; we'll save that for the viewers. But Jace and Clary are definitely confused as to why they feel this way, which is a big point of tension in the books," Decter said.

"Well, we plan to play the tension of it because, in romances, it's not what gets people together that's interesting — it's what keeps them apart," He added.

The first season of the series enjoyed quite a bit of followers. The Hollywood Reporter said that after its launch in January, the show has garnered 2.9 million total viewers, 1.6 million of it coming from the coveted 18-49 demographic. "Shadowhunters" also raked Freeform's third best series in the first quarter of 2016.

"Shadowhunters" season 2 is expected to premiere early 2017 on Freeform.
