'Star Wars Battlefront 3' release date update: 'Battlefront'-inspired game halted by LucasFilm
Before the new generation of "Star Wars: Battlefront" which is now being enjoyed by players, there was a "Star Wars: Battlefront 3" that was allegedly being made by the developers from Free Radical Design. "Battlefront 3" could have dominated the gaming scene but the project was cancelled. However, some were inspired by it and an independent game studio called Frontwire Studios started making a passion project based on the cancelled game.
The game was inspired from "Battlefront 3" and was titled "Star Wars: Galaxy in Turmoil." It featured a multiplayer battle that could reach up to 64 players and its range would also involve from ground to space, which was mind-blowing for "Battlefront III" fans.
However, the game was not affiliated with the official "Star Wars" games.
Valve had already given the go signal to make the game available for free on Steam. But on the downside, Tony Romanelli, the president of Frontwire Studios, recently received an order from LucasFilm that further development of the game must be stopped.
Romanelli shared the turnout of events in a blog post on their company website. He stated on the blog: "On Wednesday June 22, 2016, we received a letter from Lucasfilm requesting that we halt production of Galaxy in Turmoil with any Star Wars related IP at once."
He further explained the story by saying: "Rather than laying down at the first sign of trouble, I requested a meeting with the Lucasfilm executives to discuss our project and to find some common ground to work with. Honestly, I didn't expect too much negotiation to occur. But much to my surprise, executives at the top of Lucasfilm agreed to meet. A week later, that meeting took place."
Romanelli also mentioned that LucasFilm was exploring the idea of collaborating with their company. However, EA does not want them to be involved since they don't want the players of "Star Wars: Battlefront" to divert their attention to their project. After a series of suggestions he made to EA and LucasFIlm, the negotiations did not go very well.
On the bright side though, LucasFilm has mentioned to them that they really have no issue with a game that is similar with "Star Wars: Battlefront" as long as they do not use the Star Wars IP. Romanelli will still be continuing the project, but this time under a different universe and far away from the concept of "Star Wars."
