'Supernatural' season 12 spoilers: Misha Collins hints at a powerful Castiel; is Mary Winchester really alive?
The finale of "Supernatural" season 11 turned the series on its head, hinting that big changes are on the horizon for the long-running show.
After a whole season of trying to defeat the Darkness, Dean's (Jensen Ackles) impassioned plea about family was ultimately what made Amara (Emily Swallow) stop and realize that all she wanted was to reconcile with God, aka Chuck Shurley (Rob Benedict). As a reward, God's sister appeared to have resurrected Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith).
Speculations immediately cropped up on how this humongous twist will play out next season. While some fans believe that introducing Mary in the "Supernatural" mix opens the show to a slew of possible storylines, others have pointed out that it's not even certain that the Winchester matriarch is actually alive. She might just be a spirit to help give Dean closure, or her presence might cause more danger for the brothers and she's killed off (again).
While the emergence of Mary is exciting, fans are also pumped up for what season 12 has in store for Castiel (Misha Collins). In a phone interview with Bustle, the actor revealed that the writers were already working on next season's storyline, but they haven't shared anything with him yet. However, Collins did hint that he has been pushing for the return of a powerful Castiel.
"I would love it if there was a little stretch where he could possibly be the powerful ally that he was and just play it a little bit before somehow hobbling him again," Collins said. "It's been awhile since Cas has been just the ally at full power that he once was."
Castiel and Mary's roles in season 12 might still be undefined, but what is certain is that when "Supernatural" returns, the show will have a new time slot. Instead of Wednesday, the series will be aired on Thursdays at 9 p.m. Aside from that, Andrew Dabb and Robert Singer will be taking over showrunner duties from Jeremy Carver.
"Supernatural" season 12 is expected to return to The CW in the fall.
