'The Blacklist' season 4 premiere spoilers: What is Red's connection to Liz?

(Facebook/NBCBlacklist)"The Blacklist" season 4 premieres on Sept. 22.

"The Blacklist" season 3 saw the return of Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) after seemingly being killed off earlier in the season. And while the plot twist may have shocked some fans of the show, there has always been one question that everyone wants answered: What is Red's connection to Liz?

The show has built up on the premise that Red (James Spader) is someone who has deep ties with Liz's family and her past. And three seasons in, fans still continue to wonder how he is related to her. There was some speculation that Red is actually Liz's father, but season 3 saw the introduction of her allegedly biological father, Alexander Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen). So where does that leave Red?

Perhaps season 4 will begin to slowly peel away the layers of Red's identity. Executive producer Jon Bokenkamp spoke to Deadline and revealed that there's a lot of material to work with. Red and Kirk's relationship goes way back and it's something that will be delved deeper into as the show continues.

"Red's self-interest is fueled by his history, and Kirk is part of that history. I think you're going to see we have a lot of story to tell about these two and their relationship," he said.

Reports say that Kirk's true intentions may be revealed in the upcoming season. His appearance was certainly something that shocked many viewers and there are still those who believe that he's not Liz's true father.

Considering no one is ever safe on a show like "The Blacklist," season 4 may see someone get written out. Cartermatt posits that danger is always lurking on the show, which may result in a major character getting killed off. On its list are a few contenders like Red, Liz, and Kirk, among others.

However, since nothing has been confirmed at this point, fans should take the news with a grain of salt and wait for the premiere of "The Blacklist" season 4. It is scheduled to return on Sept. 22, Thursday, on NBC.
