'The Following' season 4 renewal chances diminished after petition to save the series falls short
Three months after "The Following" was cancelled, hopes that the show will be picked up by another network have dimmed, especially after the online petition created for it has lost steam.
Seasons one and two of the Fox drama series followed FBI agent, Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), in his quest to capture serial killer, Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), while season three dealt with the emergence of a new, violent cult after Carroll's execution. The series, which was often described as intense, emotionally-charged and violent, was surprisingly cancelled during the latter half of the third season due to dwindling ratings.
But fans of "The Following" stood behind the show and quickly rallied by starting an online petition enjoining fans around the world to sign and convince other networks to pick up the series. The cast and crew of the series, along with its fans, were hoping that it will be picked up by other networks like Hulu or Netflix. But the networks, including streaming service, Hulu, passed on the show.
There were reports that Netflix appeared to be interested and had picked up "The Following" for a fourth season but it turned out to be a hoax. Actor, Shawn Ashmore, who played FBI Agent, Mike Weston, in the series, even came out to address the issue. He clarified to fans that Netflix has not picked up "The Following." Actually, the streaming service giant has not even responded to any of the rumors regarding its involvement with the show.
It has been months since it has been announced that "The Following" had been cancelled. While it proved difficult, most of the cast members appear to have accepted the show's fate and had said their farewells and thank yous to their fans on their social media accounts. The show's official Twitter page has also seen a drop in activity.
As for the online petition that dedicated fans have started, it didn't come up with the expected numbers. While the petition quickly reached 13,000 signatures in July, the numbers quickly plateaued and as of August, the numbers have remained almost the same. It seems that a lot of "The Following's" followers have already lost hope and have moved on.
