The fifth and final season of A&E's psychological horror series "Bates Motel" recently premiered on the network. Although the show is nearly at its end, the show's lead actor has just been cast in the lead role in ABC's upcoming pilot. Highmore will be portraying a young autistic savant surgeon named Shaun Murphy. The character has Savant syndrome, a condition in which a person possesses prodigious skills, far from what can be considered normal. Consequently, individuals who have this condition may have neurodevelopmental disorders, autism spectrum disorders, or brain injuries. In this case, Murphy is an autistic savant.

Highmore's character is a small town boy who decides to move to the city to join a prestigious hospital, San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. New in town, Murphy's special condition and poor social skills will slightly put him out of place. But his superb medical skills will eventually win his colleagues over. In this new phase in his life, he will be guided by a good friend and mentor, Dr. Ira Glassman, who will help him pursue his passion to save lives.

"The Good Doctor" is being penned by "House's" David Shore. He will also serve as executive producer in the upcoming series, along with Daniel Dae Kim, Sebastian Lee, David Kim, and Erin Gunn.

Aside from Highmore's small screen role, he has starred in numerous films. Perhaps the movie that got him on the map was in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" wherein he portrayed the titular character. He also starred in the 2007 film "August Rush," in which he portrayed an 11-year-old musical prodigy.

ABC has yet to set a release date for the upcoming series.

More updates should roll out in the weeks to come.
