Stefan (Paul Wesley) decides to make a sacrifice in the upcoming episode 6, titled "Detoured on Some Random Backwoods Path to Hell," of the eighth season of the American supernatural and romance drama "The Vampire Diaries."

Caroline (Candace King) is forced to immediately decide on important things, in order to make sure that nothing gets in the way of keeping her family safe. This is after she learns that Siren's latest scheme is targeted on her children. Meanwhile, Stefan is running out of time so he is left with no other choice but to promise to do everything just to save the twins. However, since Alaric (Matt Davis) and Caroline continue their rift, they may end up facing a reality they have not expected, which could affect the future of their family.

Elsewhere, Stefan takes drastic measurement after Enzo (Michael Malarkey) realizes that he can no longer fight off Sybil's (guest star Nathalie Kelley) latest plan. However, Stefan's decision could end up negatively affecting his entire life. Actor Wesley reportedly directed the upcoming episode.

The promo trailer for the upcoming "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 episode, "Detoured on Some Random Backwoods Path to Hell," shows Alaric calling Seline (Kristen Gutoskie) about the whereabouts of Stefan and Caroline's twin daughters. Seline assures Alaric that the twins are safe in her hands. However, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) suddenly appears and greets his nieces. Caroline warns Stefan that she will not think twice about killing Damon when he gets in the way of her daughters' safety. Stefan and Damon are at a crossroads.

Meanwhile, executive producer Julie Plec also addressed Matt's reunion and issues with his father.

"It's sad if you think about everything Matt has been through, and that's ultimately what he has to make his dad understand," Plec explained to TV Line. "It's not just that he left, but the life he left Matt with took such a turn to sadness. That's been the biggest struggle Matt's had to fight against growing up."
