'True Detective' season 3 renewal: hopes bleak as HBO appoints new programming president
Fans of "True Detective" are still holding on to the hope that a renewal may be ordered for the show. Unfortunately, things are looking bleak as numerous reports say that it may be the end for the crime anthology series, especially with a new head honcho for HBO programming—Casey Bloys.
Michael Lombardo stepped down from his position as the head of HBO programming, which prompted the network to appoint Bloys to replace him. However, this change in management may result in "True Detective" getting the axe, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sources close to HBO apparently told the publication that Nic Pizzolatto, who spearheaded "True Detective," may likely be assigned to a new venture.
It is important to note that HBO has not officially confirmed this to be true, so fans should cautiously take this news with a grain of salt for now.
Meanwhile, other reports have claimed that "True Detective" season 3 might see the light of day after all. In fact, the series is reportedly going to go on until 2018, which is undoubtedly good news to fans. Additionally, a new character is widely believed to be joining the roster, which will apparently be played by none other than Idris Elba, who is known for his roles in both film and television.
Fans have certainly been through a lot, especially after the confusion that rose after an HBO ad suggested that the show had been cancelled for good.
Two seasons of "True Detective" have been released so far. The first season starred Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey and was met with wide critical acclaim from both fans and critics alike. The second season, however, didn't fare so well in the ratings and did not manage to live up to expectations as well as the previous season's success.
Right now, the best thing fans can do is to hope for the best, since everything is still in the rumor realm.
