'True Detective' season 3 spoilers, rumors: Robert Downey Jr. new series delaying upcoming installment?

(Facebook / True Detective)"True Detective" season 3 remains unannounced as Robert Downey Jr.'s new series is said to be delaying the upcoming installment

As fans await for news on the release of "True Detective" season three, new rumors are now pointing to a new series starring Robert Downey Jr., which is said to be the reason for the delay in the show's renewal.

Is HBO now focusing on this new crime-related series that will star the "Iron Man" hero? There is no confirmation yet regarding this speculation but some believe that the reason why "True Detective" has not been renewed yet is due to Nic Pizzolatto's new project.

As first revealed by Variety, Pizzolatto and Downey Jr. have started discussing a drama project for HBO. With Pizzolatto probably busy developing the perfect storylines for Downey Jr.'s new series, it is understandable that he may not have time to once again focus on "True Detective" season three.

Also, HBO has not yet announced the third installment and it is speculated that the reason behind it is due to the fall in ratings that the second season saw. While the first season that starred Matthew McConaughey was a huge success, the second installment didn't really do well with both fans and critics.

On the other hand, loyal followers are still hoping for a renewal even if it means it won't happen anytime soon. Some reports also suggest that "True Detective" season three may air in 2018 with only eight episodes, instead of the original 13-episode per season standard.

Unfortunately, HBO still hasn't given fans good news despite McConaughey's revelation in June that he would love to reprise his role as Rust Cohle. This could be the actor's way of saying that he wants to see some developments in production as he believes that there's still hope for the series that was once a hit among viewers.

If McConaughey does return to the small screens as Rust Cohle, it might do well for "True Detective" season three as fans are still clamoring for more of the character who first gave the show its big break in terms of viewership.
