'Veep' season 5 spoilers: Show picks up the morning after elections; will Selina Meyer hold onto presidency?
"Veep" was victorious at the recently concluded 67th Primetime Emmy Awards. The show nabbed five awards including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress for Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Tony Hale.
Season five returns next spring with some behind-the scenes changes. Series creator, Armando Iannucci, exited the series due to personal reasons. David Mandel, former "Curb Your Enthusiasm" executive producer, has been tapped to take over. According to HBO, "Armando is not replaceable, but we are confident that 'Veep' will continue to be produced at the highest levels with new showrunner David Mandel."
The cast and crew officially begin production on the fifth season this Oct. 5. They will be saying goodbye to Baltimore, as the new season will be filmed in Los Angeles.
Anna Chlumsky spoke to TV Line during the Emmys and revealed that Mandel and the new writing team have managed to keep the show "super consistent. They know the characters, they know the rhythm, they know this wacky style of writing that we have and I'm really confident," she said.
When season five returns, it will pick up the morning after the election. Last season, both Selina Meyer (Dreyfus) and Republican opponent Bill O'Brien (Brad Leland) received 296 Electoral votes, which means that in case of a tie, neither of them could be victorious.
While the events of next season have yet to be unveiled, Tony Hale shared, "I hear she's still president, which is a horrifying fact." Hale admitted that he hasn't seen a lot of the upcoming season's scripts but did say that, "It's going to get ugly. It's gonna get even uglier than it has been."
Hale also revealed that he still doesn't know what happened between Gary and Selina during the much-referenced but never revealed events of Labor Day. "Something dark happened on Labor Day, something really dark," the actor said.
Season five of "Veep" returns to HBO on April 2016.
