'Vikings' season 4 spoilers: King Harald questions Ragnar's leadership in episode 8; will Kwenthrith kill Ecbert?

(Facebook/Vikings)Rollo (Clive Standen) waits for Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) and his fleet to arrive in this scene from Vikings season 4.

"Vikings" fans saw Ragnar's fleet suffer a horrendous defeat at the hands of Rollo and his French army. While it appears that Rollo is set to become his brother's most formidable enemy, King Harald questions Ragnar's leadership.

In the previous episode, "The Profit and the Loss," Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) leads his ship up the river to find Rollo (Clive Standen) and a French army waiting for them. The Vikings' confidence was soon shattered when Rollo deployed a variety of tactics to defeat them.

This defeat will undoubtedly be felt in the next few episodes, but King Ragnar has other things to worry about. A synopsis for episode 8, "Portage," reveals that King Harald Finehair (Peter Franzen) is questioning Ragnar's leadership as his plan of attack failed miserably against the French. However, the Viking king might have something up his sleeves that he's keeping quiet. Meanwhile, Rollo and Gisla (Morgane Polanski) uncover information that will help cement the new count's place in the French court, while Count Odo's (Owen Roe) enemies move against him.

There seems to be a lot going on next episode and its trailer does a good job in building up the excitement. The short clip unfolds with King Ecbert (Linus Roache) informing Kwenthrith (Amy Bailey) that she's no longer the Queen of Mercia. She doesn't take too kindly the news that he has usurped her and calls him a monster. King Harald is seen telling Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) that someone is responsible for the failure and appears to be criticizing Ragnar. The shield maiden doesn't appear pleased with what she's hearing. As for Rollo, he knows his brother too well and tells the French emperor that as long as Ragnar is alive, he's not defeated. Unfortunately, Ragnar has been acting a bit unhinged lately and is seen apparently drowning someone in the trailer. The clip ends with a shot of Kwenthrith straddling Ecbert, holding a knife to his throat. She asks him how it feels to be so close to death and laughs at his frightened face.

It's not surprising that Harald will be questioning Ragnar's actions as it would further his own ambitions. He certainly has his work cut out for him as Ragnar has been acting strange as of late, his addiction to Yidu's (Dianne Doan) "medicine" clearly affecting him. The sad thing is, even Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) blames their defeat on Ragnar. The question now is whether Ragnar still has his son and Lagertha's support as he will need it to carry out his plan against Rollo.

It's inevitable that the two brothers will face each other in battle, and as the show's midseason trailer teases, it will be a fight to the death.

"Vikings" season 4 will return with a new episode on Apr. 7 on the History Channel.
