Series creator Michael Hirst revealed to Entertainment Weekly that "both Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) and Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick)... had tried to keep Bjorn as a child, not respecting him as an equal... Bjorn takes off into the wilderness to prove, both to himself and Ragnar, that he can survive in the most extreme conditions."
However, the bear fight is just one fight Bjorn has to face. Hirst said that there are other bigger problems out there for him. Other forces are plotting against him as well.
Meanwhile, Ragnar and Lagertha will be more fierce and fearless in this season. In one of the teaser promos that was first released on Entertainment Tonight, the two are shown declaring that they do not fear death.
"[T]he problem with power is the more you have, the more others want it. And in my world, power can only be truly be built ... with blood," Ragnar says in the teaser.
Lagertha, on the other hand, bravely says, "I embrace the idea of life and death for I am not the one in charge of my fate."
When The Hollywood Reporter asked Hirst if Lagertha will be trying to reclaim her old power, he revealed, "She has an amazing story arc this season... [We] have created one of the few female characters on American TV who is a mother, a wife and kicks ass... Her trajectory and role though are just as significant as Ragnar's."
Season 4 will premiere on Feb. 18 10/9c on History.
