'Wayward Pines' season 3 release date, update: Series renewal for another season looking positive

While it's true that "Wayward Pines" season 2 experienced a drop in viewership that prompted the speculations that it would not be renewed for another season run, the latest in the rumor mill is that there is a big possibility for the series to offer its brand of entertainment for another season.

Sources reveal that Fox Television Group CEO Dana Walden confirmed that there is a good chance for the series to get a season 3 renewal as, after all, the show was allegedly rated as the number 1 scripted series of summer.

"I definitely think there could be a Season 3... it's still the No. 1 scripted show of the summer," Walden said during the Television Critics Association summer press tour last month.

It has been more than a month since Walden made that statement, but, to this day, there is still no solid piece of information that can assure the fans of "Wayward Pines" that it will really be renewed for another season. Despite this, though, there are already various speculations as to how its story may pan out when the series returns for its next season.

As the last scene of "Wayward Wines" season 2 finale showed a baby looking like a human, it is speculated that, if ever the series gets renewed for another season, it will feature the evolution of the Abbies. After all, no less than "Wayward Pines" author Blake Crouch hinted this possibility.

"Evolution has always pushed forward, and (the scene) suggests that the Abbies are changing also. The Abbies will evolve into something else. And we wanted to just drop the notion that perhaps when these residents of Wayward Pines emerge from the pods, they're going to find a very different world than the ones they left behind," said Crouch in an interview with Entertainment Weekly last July.

Nonetheless, there are those who opine that M. Night Shyamalan and Fox should apply the same formula they used during the show's first season in the event that the series will be green lighted for another season. It should use the same approach used in Netflix's hit "Stranger Things," in order to make the series more engaging and prevent further audience loss.  After all, both series have common denominators: Apart from the Duffer brothers who wrote the respective season 1 scripts of the said series, both belong to the science-fiction/mystery genre.

Will "Wayward Pines" get a season 3 renewal? Fans can only hope and wait for the time being.
