'Alien: Covenant' cast news, spoilers: New Katherine Waterston poster released; James Franco to play Branson

(Facebook/alienanthology)"Alien: Covenant" has reportedly added James Franco to the cast.

The upcoming "Prometheus" sequel, "Alien: Covenant," has recently released a poster of Katherine Waterston in action. In addition to that, it has been revealed that Waterston's character, Daniels, will have a husband and might be played by James Franco.

The poster was exclusively obtained by Entertainment Weekly, which also spoke to the actress and director Ridley Scott. Waterston, dressed in a gray tank top and wielding a weapon, looks determined and afraid at the same time. Perhaps she is being hunted and is wary of her surroundings — perhaps not. Perhaps she is sneaking up on the creature that will be featured in the forthcoming film — perhaps not. So much can be said about the photo, but none can be confirmed.

While speaking to the publication, Scott revealed that "Alien: Covenant" will attempt to answer some lingering questions left open at the end of "Prometheus."

"'Covenant' is really going to show you who did it and why," he explained.

Waterston had nothing but praise for Scott, who directed "Prometheus" and the original 1979 "Alien" film.

"He's a master! He's got the energy of 10 25-year-olds," the actress said.

In other cast news, Variety reports that Franco has joined the upcoming film, although 20th Century Fox did not respond for a comment. AvPGalaxy, a dedicated site to the "Alien" and "Predator" franchise, stated in an exclusive reprot earlier this month that Franco had been cast as Branson, Daniels' husband. However, it has been pointed out that his stint on the upcoming film will not be a long one. He will only be appearing at the start of the movie, for about 10 minutes, along with a few smaller appearances throughout.

Originally scheduled to premiere on Aug. 4, 2017, "Alien: Covenant" was moved to an earlier slot, on May 19, 2017. The sequel will bow in theaters alongside the new "Baywatch" film and "Annabelle 2."
