Amazon 'Top Gear' release date this fall; show to be called 'The Grand Tour'

(Amazon)Amazon's version of "Top Gear" has been dubbed "The Grand Tour."

"Top Gear" fans who are dedicated to the show's original hosts — Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May — are in for a treat as the trio move to Amazon to start the new series dubbed "The Grand Tour."

When Clarkson's contract was not renewed with BBC after an argument with a producer, reports say that his "Top Gear" co-hosts immediately followed suit and decided to leave the show as well. The trio then signed a contract with Amazon Prime, the online streaming service of the electronic commerce company, in order to create a new motoring show.

It took a long while for Clarkson and Amazon to name the new show, with suggestions ranging from "House of Cars" to "Gear Knobs," all of which were strongly opposed by the show's lawyers due to legalities.

"Every morning, I'd make a £7000 call to the lawyer with an idea, and every afternoon I'd get a £7000 reply saying it was already in use by someone in New Zealand or France or Ukraine," Clarkson shares in his column for the Sunday Times, according to Metro.

Reports say that "The Grand Tour" became the official name of the show after it was found to fit perfectly with the shows concept — travelling around the world and holding each episode in a different country, while accommodating the audience inside a giant tent.

"The Grand Tour" can be viewed by subscribers of Amazon Prime. Reports say the initial contract will include three seasons with 12 episodes. Each episode will be an hour long and unlike other shows on the online streaming service where each episode will all be available at the same release day, a new "The Grand Tour" episode will be made available just once a week.

Meanwhile the original "Top Gear" series will be hosted by Chris Evans and will be aired via Amazon's competition, Netflix.

No official release date for "The Grand Tour" has been confirmed but reports say it will be by autumn 2016.
