'Ant-Man 2' updates and news: Scott Lang's gobal fugitive status and a full-powered Wasp

(Facebook/antman)Director Peyton Reed says Ant-Man and the Wasp are a team.

After the spectacular success of "Ant-Man," the film's cast and crew are even more determined to prove that even the smallest superhero can make a huge difference. And this time around, Ant-Man will have an equally miniscule partner — the Wasp.

"Ant-Man" won big at the recent Saturn awards, nabbing the Best Comic-to-Film Motion Picture trophy and besting "Avengers: Age of Ultron." But it's par for the course for the film, which a lot of skeptics had written off since it focused on one of Marvel's lesser known superheroes.

However, moviegoers absolutely went wild over Paul Rudd's funny and irreverent Scott Lang and the antics of his band of misfits. Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly as Dr. Hank Pym and Hope Van Dyne, respectively, were also the perfect foil to Rudd.

Now "Ant-Man" director Peyton Reed and the cast and crew are back at work on the film's sequel, "Ant-Man and the Wasp." If the title isn't a big enough hint, Reed said in an interview with Modern Myth Media that he had always thought of Ant-Man and the Wasp as a team and that the sequel is "every bit as much as her movie as it is Scott Lang's." What has also made the director excited is the fact that the sequel will be showing the Wasp as a full-fledged superhero and that viewers will be seeing her powers and how she fights. Viewers will also learn more about why she wants to fight and become the Wasp as her backstory is fleshed out.

When Marvel fans last saw Ant-Man in "Civil War," he broke out of the Raft and is now a global fugitive. While it might be a similar situation for Lang, it's admittedly a bigger problem. But it's also one that Reed is excited to delve into.

"I think that's one of the fun things and challenges about the Marvel movies for us, for the directors and for the writers, is you do have to sort of consider what happened in the previous movies in terms of your jumping-off point for those characters," Reed explained.

The director added that they already figured out how they'll deal with Lang's fugitive status and teased that "there will be some big leaps forward." Unfortunately, he can't tell what those leaps are. But he did assure fans that there's a big chance that Luis (Michael Pena), Kurt (David Dastmalchian) and Dave (T.I.) will be back as well.

"Ant-Man and the Wasp" is slated to hit movie theaters on July 6, 2018.
