Apple Watch 2 release date rumors: Next-gen smartwatch on track for WWDC 2016?

Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is just 10 days away and everyone is waiting with bated breaths to see what the Cupertino-based tech giant has in store for its consumers. The latest reports suggest that the Apple Watch 2 will be announced at WWDC 2016. However, since Apple isn't likely to issue an official announcement, the Apple Watch 2's release date remains speculative.

Back in April, AppleInsider was able to obtain a report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo — who has become the go-to person for Apple updates due to his inside connections. Kuo's report previews some of the new features of the second-generation Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch 2 will reportedly launch with the same design as the current Apple Watch. Based on what has been revealed so far, most of its updates will be internal. Consumers may have to wait until 2017 to see a significantly redesigned form factor. As such, there are some reports that say the Apple Watch 2 will be simply called the Apple Watch S.

Nevertheless, the next-gen Apple Watch is expected to come with some welcome upgrades, including an improved display and a larger battery. Some of the rumored specs include a FaceTime camera for video calls and WiFi connectivity. If a WiFi chip will indeed be available, then this would mean that the Apple Watch 2 could operate without being tethered to an iPhone.

While its June release date isn't guaranteed, many are still expecting it especially since the first-generation Apple Watch recently experienced a price drop.

In case the Apple Watch 2 does not make an appearance at WWDC 2016, its other more likely release date will be sometime in September, along with the iPhone 7. Be sure to check out the WWDC 2016, scheduled from June 13 to 17, to see what Apple has in store.
