'Attack on Titan' season 2 news, air date: Funimation acquires rights to broadcast anime in United States, Canada

(Shingeki TV)"Attack on Titan" season 2 has been confirmed to air in April 2017. Funimation has acquired the rights to air the anime series in United States and Canada.

Good news just keeps on coming. First, it was announced that "Attack on Titan" will be returning in Japan in April 2017. Now, it has been revealed that the second season will also be arriving in the United States and Canada, thanks to Funimation.

There were previous speculations that the second season of the hit Japanese anime would not be making its way to the west. This undoubtedly disappointed fans, especially since the first season was left so open-ended. But Funimation has come to sate fans' requests by announcing that it has acquired the rights to "Attack on Titan" season 2.

The announcement was made via the official website of Funimation. Despite revealing that the anime will be coming to the United States and Canada, a release window was not stated.

"'Attack on Titan' became an instant hit since it first streamed in 2013 and we are thrilled to bring fans the long-awaited Season 2 of the series," said Funimation founder and CEO Gen Fukunaga. "'Attack on Titan' is truly a worldwide phenomenon that has continued to grow at a non-stop pace. Fans can look forward to an exciting second season."

The release window of April 2017 in Japan was first revealed via a wraparound jacket band that appeared on the 21st volume of the manga from which the show is based. And while fans are happy about the recent revelations, plot details for the second season remain scarce.

However, it is believed that the next installment will delve deeper into the source of Eren Yeager's powers — the serum. It is currently unknown how the serum transforms humans into Titans, but fans are excited to find out more. There are also going to be new Titans come the new season, with the largest of them all expected to be introduced. Apart from that, a beast-like Titan and a smart Titan are also going to make their debut.

Since these are only plot rumors at this point, fans should take this with a grain of salt.
