'Avatar 2' release date, news: Film on track for Christmas 2018 premiere

(Facebook/Avatar)"Avatar 2" is scheduled for a Christmas 2018 release.

As many fans all know by now, 2009's "Avatar" is getting a much-awaited sequel. And if things go as planned, "Avatar 2" is scheduled to be released in theaters in Christmas 2018.

Although there have been rumors of a delay in production, the film is, by all accounts, still going ahead as plotted. "We haven't moved that target yet, but we will if we need to," director James Cameron told Variety.

Cameron also revealed that "Avatar 2" won't be the end of it. As a matter of fact, there are a total of four sequels coming up, starting with the upcoming "Avatar 2" and ending with "Avatar 5." All films are planned for Christmas releases and with as little time in between as possible.

"The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it's an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we're able to fulfill on that promise," shared the director.

As for what the story is going to entail, Cameron also pointed out the importance of family. "The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children," he said. "It's more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans."

And as the first film showed viewers, the Na'vi and the humans definitely had their differences, especially when it comes to Colonel Miles Quaritch, who was the big bad in "Avatar." However, as previously reported, it looks like the colonel will be back even though he was killed off in the first film. Stephen Lang is set to reprise his role, but reports say that he will do a complete 360 and be one of the good guys this time around.

Colonel Miles isn't the only one rising from the dead, though. Sigourney Weaver's Dr. Grace Augustine is also reportedly returning. The character also died in the first installment, but Weaver is said to reprise her role once more.
