'Avatar 2' rumors: Colonel Quaritch tipped to be main villain in franchise

The sequels to "Avatar" are still years away, and with director James Cameron being coy and secretive about "Avatar 2's" plot, a whole cottage industry of rumors and theories about the movie have sprung up.

"Avatar" fans can't be faulted for their constant search for new information about the film. After all, the movie grossed about $2.7 billion in the box office while Cameron's vision of Pandora and the technology used in the film paved the way for 3D films to become popular. So it's a given that the film would inspire several sequels.

Production for "Avatar 2" hasn't officially started yet but stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are reportedly set to reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri, respectively. But two names said to be in the sequels have raised questions – Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang – as their characters have met their demise in "Avatar."

Fans will recall that Weaver's character, Dr. Grace Augustine, had been against Colonel Miles Quaritch's (Lang) plan to destroy the Hometree. The scientist was consequently shot by Quaritch and the Na'vi had tried to save her by transferring her consciousness into her Na'vi avatar. However, she died before the process could be completed, or at least, that's what viewers saw.

But with Weaver rumored to be coming back for "Avatar 2," it's clear her character is not as dead as she was made out to be. This was further emphasized by Cameron himself. According to a Coming Soon coverage of an "Avatar" press conference, the "Titanic" director dropped some hints about the character.

"Who said she died?" the director said. "Nobody dies in a science fiction movie."

He also added that Dr. Augustine's life or death would actually depend on Weaver's agent.

Another character that will reportedly come back is Colonel Quaritch, who was thought to have died too after being pierced by two large arrows, courtesy of Neytiri. But according to Deadline, the character might be set up as the Big Bad in all three sequels.

It's prudent to point out, though, that until Cameron himself makes the announcement, the possibility that these characters will return should be taken with a grain of salt.
