'Avengers: Infinity War' release date, news: Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed; Chris Pratt a go?

(Facebook/Avengers)"Avengers: Infinity War" is scheduled to hit theaters in 2018.

"Avengers: Infinity War" is still two years away, but fans are already excitedly speculating on who will be making appearances. It has been confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange will be joining the team, but reports also say that Chris Pratt's Star Lord may be playing a huge role in the upcoming superhero film.

Marvel is definitely a big player in the entertainment industry, launching the superhero frenzy that started with "Iron Man." It has since expanded its cinematic universe with an array of characters and superheroes who have starred in films and television series. When the first "Avengers" film came out, fans around the world were thrilled to see a handful of superheroes joining forces to save mankind. Since then, several more heroes have been introduced. And "Avengers: Infinity War" is set to feature a whole bunch of them and is expected to surpass the superhero buffet that was on display in "Captain America: Civil War."

However, Marvel has yet to confirm all the big names that will be featured in the upcoming "Avengers" film. It is also unknown whether small screen heroes like Jessica Jones or Luke Cage will make it. But Robert Downey Jr. certainly managed to spark excitement when he posted a mock poster of "Avengers: Infinity War" with the names of all the supposed cast members.

While the poster of the film Downey Jr. shared was revealed to have been made by a fan, it has been confirmed by Cumberbatch himself that Doctor Stephen Strange is going to join forces with the group of superheroes. Cumberbatch is set to debut in November as the magical, mystical sorcerer in "Doctor Strange."

Another popular rumor making rounds online is that Star Lord of "Guardians of the Galaxy" is set to play a pivotal role in the upcoming "Avengers: Infinity War." Since the film is expected to see the team of superheroes going against space villain Thanos (Josh Brolin), it would only make sense for Peter Quill to feature as well.

"Avengers: Infinity War" is scheduled to premiere in 2018.
