'Bates Motel' season 5 spoilers, cast news: Rihanna as Marion Crane

(Facebook/BatesMotelAETV)"Bates Motel" season 5 will be its final season.

"Bates Motel" is gearing up for its fifth season — and coincidentally, its last. It has been announced that season 5 will close the series for good, but fans can expect a very exciting conclusion to the A&E show. Season 5 will see a relatively new Norma and the iconic shower scene with Marion Crane, who will be brought to life by none other than Rihanna.

The revelation that season 5 would be the final chapter in the popular series was made at the San Diego Comic-Con. It has been previously speculated that the show would end with five seasons under its belt, mostly due to the fact that Norma was killed in the season 4 finale. Norman's descent into madness will be highlighted more in the new season as the series is getting close to the Norman everyone saw in "Psycho," the cult classic film from which the show is based.

As for the casting of Rihanna in the role of Marion Crane, executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin weighed in on what led them to make that big decision.

"We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way. We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate," said Cuse and Ehrin at the San Diego Comic-Con.

As for what fans can expect from the upcoming season, Ehrin teased that the new Norma, the one who lives within Norman's head, is a character that will be explored more. "We're gonna get to spend more time with her now and know her better," she said to TVLine's Michael Ausiello.

Apart from that, Vera Farmiga revealed that scenes were shot of the more unpredictable Norma. "I started getting to know her but those scenes never ended up in the final edits," she said. Additionally, things are about to get "racy" between Norma and Norman in the new season.

The final season of "Bates Motel" will premiere in 2017.
