After years of speculations, the 1982 classic sci-fi film "Blade Runner" will finally get a sequel slated to hit theaters on Jan. 12, 2018, as announced by Alcon Entertainment last week.

The new "Blade Runner" movie will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, who is known for his work on "Prisoners" and "Sicario." Not much has been revealed about the movie except for the people behind the project.

Michael Green and Hampton Fancher, who co-wrote the original story with Ridley Scott, will be on board for the script. Also on board is Roger Deakins, a renowned cinematographer, so it's expected that the sequel will be big. Filming will start in July this year.

Ryan Gosling has already been reported to play the lead role in the movie and he is said to star alongside the original movie's Harrison Ford. The latter is set to return to reprise his role as Rick Deckard.

The sequel is currently untitled but is being referred to as "Blade Runner 2." According to reports, the story will take place several decades after what happened to the original movie's ending. For those who have not seen the movie, the story revolves around an ex-police officer, a member of the group called blade runners, who hunts down genetically engineered android called replicants.

Movies that are scheduled to release in January are usually thought of as less quality films, according to HitFix. Does it also mean that "Blade Runner 2" won't do well when it arrives in January 2018?

According to experts, releasing the movie early in 2018 is just a right decision. Ryan Reynold's "Deadpool" is proof that the release date doesn't matter so long as the movie appeals to the audiences and is being marketed properly, according to TheNumbers.com founder Bruce Nash.

"Blade Runner" may have been received well at the time of its release, but when a sequel comes out in 2018, the movie will be more than 30 years old, and it will pose as a challenge for younger audiences who do not know about the movie.
