'Borderlands 3' release date: Game speculated to launch in 2017

(Facebook / Borderlands)The psycho mask has become one of the signature items associated with "Borderlands."

"Battleborn" has been released, and speculations are rife that "Borderlands 3" will follow soon. Development is believed to have started early this year and it is possible for the game to be ready by 2017.

The development of the game "Borderlands 3" was first announced in April during the PAX East event. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford himself updated his Twitter account to post, "Today, here's what you learned: Battleborn art director, Scott Kester, is moving on to next Borderlands project."

However, no other updates were made following the reveal, and during the recently held Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), no mention was made. Although disappointed, fans believe that Gearbox is trying to boost the sales of "Battleborn," which was released in May and was received with mixed reviews. But now that those improvements have already been made to "Battleborn" with DLCs released, it is widely believed that "Borderlands 3" will now be given focus.

During the PAX East event, Pitchford said that while planning has started, a lot of work still needs to be done. He said, "We don't even know if we're going to call it Borderlands 3. We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know."

In the meantime, Gearbox has stated that the upcoming installment of "Borderlands" will be made for new-generation modules. These include PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One consoles.

For now, gamers can only imagine what the next installment will be like, what new elements would be seen, and how big the improvements would be. The game is likely to introduce a new villain, though, as Handsome Jack has been killed off in "Borderlands 2." Handsome Jack appeared in "Telltale's Tales from the Borderlands," but has died in the series as well.

There are four characters a player could choose from in the game and customization was already made possible in the previous versions. Some are hoping that more characters will be added to the game as multi-player mode has been made available on some platforms.
