'Chicago Fire' season 4 spoilers: Dawson makes life-altering decision that will affect her relationship with Casey on episode 21 'Kind of a Crazy Idea'

(NBC)Dawson saves a young boy on 'Kind of a Crazy Idea.'

Dawson makes a life-changing decision that will significantly impact her life and her future with Casey on an all-new episode of "Chicago Fire."

In the upcoming episode titled "Kind of a Crazy Idea," the firehouse is called in to an apartment fire where Dawson rescues a young boy from the blaze. Dawson will develop an attachment to the boy and will continuously follow up his case, especially when she discovers that he is being taken care of a negligent foster parent. This leads her to make a very fateful decision.

"A light bulb goes off on her in terms of, 'Do things really happen for a reason? Maybe I can take care of this young boy temporarily?' Something, emotionally within her, really responds to not only the child, but the child's situation, which is fairly dire," executive producer Matt Olmstead told TVLine.

Dawson's decision will also affect Casey, who is currently preoccupied with his political career. While Dawson is resolute in her decision, she makes it clear to Casey that she won't force him to support her. Casey will also go through his own dilemma in the final episodes of the season when he finds himself attracted to political consultant Susan Weller.

These latest developments, with Dawson and Casey both making life-defining decisions, will significantly impact their future as a couple. Olmstead also revealed that the status of their relationship — whether they are engaged or whether they still have plans to marry — will be resolved by the end of the season but "not before going through some rocky terrain."

Before all that relationship drama unfolds, "Kind of a Crazy Idea" will also find Severide hitting red tape as he tries to upgrade the firehouse's masks. This leads to Casey using his political ties to pull a few strings. Meanwhile, Brett and Cruz devise a plan to get Otis to see Dr. Halstead for a blood test.

To see how everything unfolds, be sure to tune in to "Kind of a Crazy Idea" airing on May 3.

Season 4 of "Chicago Fire" airs every Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
